How to Change a Tyre: A Simple Guide by Bob Mol Motors Caringbah

Bob Mol Motors change a tyre

A flat tyre never happens at a convenient time, but knowing how to change it safely can get you back on the road quickly. At Bob Mol Motors Caringbah, we believe every driver should know this basic skill. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide you can follow anywhere.

1. Make sure you’re in a safe location

If you notice a flat tyre while driving, slow down and pull over to a safe, flat area away from traffic. If possible, make a turn into a side street and ensure you’re away from the corner. Turn on your hazard lights and apply the handbrake.

2. Gather the Tools You Need

You’ll usually find these in your vehicle’s boot and underneath or around the spare tyre:

  • Spare tyre

  • Jack

  • Wheel brace (lug wrench)

  • Owner’s manual

3. Loosen the wheel nuts on the flat tyre

Before lifting the car, slightly loosen the wheel nuts with the wheel brace.
Turn them counter-clockwise, but don’t remove them completely yet.

4. Jack Up the Car

Place the jack under the vehicle’s jacking point (check your owner’s manual regarding this).
Raise the vehicle until the tyre is about 5–10 cm off the ground.

5. Remove the Flat Tyre

Finish unscrewing the loosened wheel nuts.
Pull the tyre straight toward you and set it aside safely.

6. Mount the Spare Tyre

Place the new tyre onto the wheel studs.
Screw the nuts back on by hand to keep the tyre in place.

7. Lower the Car & Tighten the Nuts

Lower the jack until the tyre is supporting the car again.
Now use the wheel brace to tighten the wheel nuts firmly in a criss-cross pattern.

8. Pack Away Your Tools

Put the flat tyre and tools back in the boot.
Drive gently and have your spare tyre checked or replaced as soon as possible – especially if it’s a space-saver wheel.
